Great Crested Grebe

A bird I've long wanted to see. I was delighted to get this picture of it and even more surprised to see that I'd caught two. A delightfully elegant waterbird with ornate head plumes which led to its being hunted for its feathers, almost leading to its extermination from the UK. They dive to feed and also to escape, preferring this to flying. On land they are clumsy because their feet are placed so far back on their bodies. They have an elaborate courtship display in which they rise out of the water and shake their heads. Very young grebes often ride on their parents' backs.

Thinking Heron

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in the milder south and west, but many birds retreat in winter from the ice in colder regions. It has become common in summer even inside the Arctic circle along the Norwegian coast. The largest European heron. It can stand with neck stretched out, looking for food, or hunch down with its neck bent over its chest. In flight it holds its neck retracted and has large rounded wings. It is usually solitary although several birds may feed fairly close together. It stalks its food, often standing motionless for some considerable time. It usually feeds close to the bank or shore, but may wade out into shallow water. A lovely close up of this grey heron as it moves from one feeding place to another. Just right for whatever the occasion.

The Barnacle Goose is a medium sized goose with a fairly long neck and short, small bill. Larger than the Brent Goose and smaller than the Greater Canada Goose, its white or creamy-coloured face and forehead and crisp black and white appearance immediately distinguishes it from these other species of black Branta geese. They are very sociable birds and breed in the Arctic. They migrate through Norway and spend the winter on the Inner Solway coast in Scotland. They fly in packs in long lines and have a chorus of barking or yapping noises.

Fishing Egret

The little egret Egretta garzetta is a small white heron with attractive white plumes on crest, back and chest, black legs and bill and yellow feet. It first appeared in the UK in significant numbers in 1989 and first bred in Dorset in 1996. Its colonization followed naturally from a range expansion intro western and northern France in previous decades. It is now at home on numerous south coast sites, both as a breeding species and as a winter visitor. Little egret feathers were once very popular for decorating hats.

Snowy Robin Postcard

Today we associate robins with Christmas, and the bird always appears on Christmas cards. A common explanation is that the Victorian postmen who delivered Christmas cards wore red uniforms, and were nicknamed "robin redbreasts". So people associated receiving their cards with robins. The truth is probably much simpler, for the robin is most visible at Christmas, when its bright red breast, which the bird puffs out to keep warm, brings colour to drab surroundings, and the male begins to sing loudly to attract a mate. It is also in the depths of winter, when insect food is scarce, that robins are most tame. So robins have always been as much a part of the Christmas scene as snow and holly. The UK's favourite bird - with its bright red breast it is familar throughout the year and especially at Christmas! Males and females look identical, and young birds have no red breast and are spotted with golden brown. Robins sing nearly all year round and despite their cute appearance, they are aggressively territorial and are quick to drive away intruders. They will sing at night next to street lights.

Two beautiful white face Cockateil, vector illustrations, themed with red roses, hearts and each perched by a gothic window.

"The Cockatiel's distinctive erectile crest expresses the animal's state of being and is dramatically vertical when the cockatiel is startled or excited, in its neutral or relaxed state, and flattened close to the head when the animal is angry or defensive. The crest is also flat but protrudes outward in the back when the cockatiel is trying to appear alluring or flirtatious. In contrast to most Cockatoos, the Cockatiel has long tail feathers roughly making up half of its total length. The Cockatiel is the smallest and only parakeet type of Cockatoo species" ~ Wikipedia

Congratulations on the wonderful news!" on the inside. The name ‘cormorant’ has been derived from the Latin words ‘Corvus Marinus’, which means ‘marine crow’ or ‘sea raven’. Cormorants are also known as shags in some parts of the world. They have slender, sharp, hooked beaks which can give a nasty bite; a patch of bare skin under the mouth; and a stiff tail. All the four toes on each foot are webbed, which facilitates them in swimming and chasing fish underwater. An interesting fact is that Cormorants are used by fishermen in Asia to prevent other birds from grabbing their catch.

Swan Trio Print

The mute swan is a very large white waterbird. It has a long S-shaped neck, and an orange bill with black at the base of it. Flies with its neck extended and regular slow wingbeats. The population in the UK has increased recently, perhaps due to better protection of this species. The problem of lead poisoning on lowland rivers has also largely been solved by a ban on the sale of lead fishing weights. Some birds stay in their territories all year, while others move short distances and form winter flocks. In cold weather, some birds arrive from Europe into eastern England. This beautiful trio of mute swans are enjoying an early morning crusie in the October sunshine on a lake in central England. A delightful image fror any home or office environment.

Unique we're moving / we've moved cards for business and personal use featuring the white-breasted cormorant on a fully customizable card. The white-breasted cormorant is part of the Phalacrocoracidae bird family which has 40 species of cormorants and shags. It is also the largest of the cormorants. The bird dives beneath the water’s surface, swimming swiftly underwater, it uses its broad tail as a rudder and its strong thigh muscles and webbed feet for propulsion. Most prey is brought to the surface before swallowing. It is able to swallow fish larger than the normal diameter of its neck because a unique musculature of the neck allows it to stretch out. The throat, or gular pouch, is also used as a signaling device and as a means for cooling the body. By panting and fluttering the gular pouch, blood passing through the rich concentration of capillaries is rapidly cooled. These birds can dive as deep as 100 feet and the longest recorded dive has been of 71 seconds.
