Thinking Heron

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), is a wading bird of the heron family Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in the milder south and west, but many birds retreat in winter from the ice in colder regions. It has become common in summer even inside the Arctic circle along the Norwegian coast. The largest European heron. It can stand with neck stretched out, looking for food, or hunch down with its neck bent over its chest. In flight it holds its neck retracted and has large rounded wings. It is usually solitary although several birds may feed fairly close together. It stalks its food, often standing motionless for some considerable time. It usually feeds close to the bank or shore, but may wade out into shallow water. A lovely close up of this grey heron as it moves from one feeding place to another. Just right for whatever the occasion.

Fishing Egret

The little egret Egretta garzetta is a small white heron with attractive white plumes on crest, back and chest, black legs and bill and yellow feet. It first appeared in the UK in significant numbers in 1989 and first bred in Dorset in 1996. Its colonization followed naturally from a range expansion intro western and northern France in previous decades. It is now at home on numerous south coast sites, both as a breeding species and as a winter visitor. Little egret feathers were once very popular for decorating hats.

The dabchick or Little Grebe - latin name: Tachybaptus ruficollis - is a small and pretty wetland bird that is fouond in most of Eurasia and Africa. It mainly eats fish and other aquatic animals, caught by diving in stints of up to 50 seconds underwater. It often associates with ducks and it may follow Hippopotamuses (Hippopotamus amphbius), catching the aquatic life it disturbs. Like other grebes it sometimes eats its own feathers as they act as a protective wrapping for fish bones, protecting the bird from harm when it regurgitates pellets. This original photograph of an immature Dabchick floating on a lake was taken in a bird sanctuary in South Africa and is in color. The pale bill with the vertical black band near the base of the lower jaw and the pale tan and brown feathers are clearly visible against the grey blue water of the lake. If you're looking for the ideal card to send a boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse that you've broken up with and miss terribly, then this fully customizable card is ideal.
