Well this year is going so quickly, it's not much of a summer but I did manage a lovely day out with the puffins last month. I did get soaked even though the weatherman said it was going to be a dry day - ah well, it was a lovely day out none the less. So, new photos of puffins, new products from Zazzle equals a very busy time. I hope you enjoy looking at them and if  you do have any queries or special request or even just some advice about a product - contact me through the store link on my Zazzle store.

Fishing Egret

The little egret Egretta garzetta is a small white heron with attractive white plumes on crest, back and chest, black legs and bill and yellow feet. It first appeared in the UK in significant numbers in 1989 and first bred in Dorset in 1996. Its colonization followed naturally from a range expansion intro western and northern France in previous decades. It is now at home on numerous south coast sites, both as a breeding species and as a winter visitor. Little egret feathers were once very popular for decorating hats.

This is a wild sparrowhawk. They use ambush as their method of hunting. It's a very fast, agile and nimble bird and is quite difficult to spot. I couldn't believe my luck when I came across this one, and I'm happy to say that he didn't finish his meal and the unfortunate bird did get away and survive.

The sparrowhawk is a secretive and solitary hunter. It favours woodland where it hunts along the woodland edges and clearings. It is highly manoeverable. It usually takes small birds such as chaffinch, yellowhammer and great tit. This is a male and has just caught a moorhen. Quarry is eaten on the ground or on a stump, the hawk standing with both feet on its victim, drooping wings to form a tent and spreading its tail as if to give support. As seen here. I'm happy to say it survived.

This is one of my favourite pictures I have of a greylag goose. I just love the pose as he runs across the water. Actually he was protecting his mate and was rushing off here and there being the proud partner and seeing off the competition.

This is the largest of the grey geese and most heavily built. This one was just taking off, and disappeared with a few others that day.

The mallard is a large and heavy looking duck. It has a long body and a long and broad bill. The male has a dark green head, a yellow bill, is mainly purple-brown on the breast and grey on the body. The female is mainly brown with an orange bill. It breeds in all parts of the UK in summer and winter, wherever there are suitable wetland habitats, although it is scarcer in upland areas. Mallards in the UK may be resident breeders or migrants - many of the birds that breed in Iceland and northern Europe spend the winter here.

Did you know that female ducks make the familiar quacking sound that we associate with ducks. The male  or drake gives an occasional subdued, horse sounding 'raarb' call.

Cruising Tufted Duck by Welshpixels

The tufted duck is a medium-sized diving duck, smaller than a mallard. It is black on the head, neck, breast and back and white on the sides. It has a small crest and a yellow eye. In flight it shows an obvious white stripe across the back of the wing. It breeds in the UK across lowland areas of England, Scotland and Ireland, but less commonly in Wales, with most birds being residents. Numbers increase in the UK in winter because of birds moving to the UK from Iceland and northern Europe.
