Wild Red Kites

Milvus milvus

Milvus milvus. This magnificently graceful bird of prey is unmistakable with its reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail. It was saved from national extinction by one of the world's longest running protection programmes, and has now been successfully re-introduced to England and Scotland. This kite was photographed over the Welsh countryside where they are a beautiful sight to behold.

Wheatear birthday card

A female wheatear perched on a fence post in France. A birthday card for the ornithologist or bird lover. This one was taken from the car window, creeping along at a yard a minute. I think it's either a juvenile or female, or both.

I love watching these birds take off. so much effort goes into getting these large birds into the air. Even more fun trying to predict when they're going to take off and to catch them in flight. Hope you enjoy the drama as you sip your drink.

This group of birds looks really cute as they walk two by two, almost as if they're on an outing and the two infront with their questioning gazes as if to say - are we going the right way?

Nuthatch in the woodland

A busy nuthatch on the trunk of the tree in which she is rearing her young. I really enjoyed watching the pair flying back and forth with beaks full of juicy insects for their young. Matching postage available too.

This is a wild sparrowhawk. They use ambush as their method of hunting. It's a very fast, agile and nimble bird and is quite difficult to spot. I couldn't believe my luck when I came across this one, and I'm happy to say that he didn't finish his meal and the unfortunate bird did get away and survive.

The sparrowhawk is a secretive and solitary hunter. It favours woodland where it hunts along the woodland edges and clearings. It is highly manoeverable. It usually takes small birds such as chaffinch, yellowhammer and great tit. This is a male and has just caught a moorhen. Quarry is eaten on the ground or on a stump, the hawk standing with both feet on its victim, drooping wings to form a tent and spreading its tail as if to give support. As seen here. I'm happy to say it survived.

This is one of my favourite pictures I have of a greylag goose. I just love the pose as he runs across the water. Actually he was protecting his mate and was rushing off here and there being the proud partner and seeing off the competition.

This is the largest of the grey geese and most heavily built. This one was just taking off, and disappeared with a few others that day.

Moorhen by Welshpixels

The moorhen is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird, that is usually found near water. From a distance it looks black with a ragged white line along its body. Up close it is olive-brown on the back and the head and underneath are blue-grey. It has a red bill with a yellow tip. It breeds in the UK in lowland areas, especially in central and eastern England. It is scarce in northern Scotland and the uplands of Wales and northern England. UK breeding birds are residents and seldom travel far. Moorhens tend to be solitary and feed around the water's edge. Though they appear placid, fighting is common and often prolonged, with each bird striking the other violently with the feet and even attempting to push or drag them underwater. Moorhens feed both on water and land and so have a varied diet of leaves, seeds, berries, worms, snails and fish, and also other birds' eggs.
