This red-winged blackbird keychain will keep your keys together. They are one of the first migraters to arrive here in upstate New York in early spring and stay until late fall. They settle in at our pond and nest in the cattails. While the eggs are in the nests and when the young are just venturing out, the adults are fierce protectors of their territory. As we walk around the pond, they fly past us trying to divert our attention, squawking all the time. The male is all black with a red shoulder and yellow wing bar, while the female is dark brown. Seeds and insects are their main foods.

We had a really harsh winter last year and this charming Blackbird came along the garden path, almost to the door, in search of something to eat. I was so thrilled to get this photo of a normally shy species that I rewarded the plucky bird with some mealworms. Luckily my garden birds didn’t go hungry in the snow.
