Blue Jays are year round inhabitants of upstate New York. They are beautiful and comical clowns but can also be pests, keeping the bird seed from the smaller birds. We had a really harsh winter last year and this charming Blackbird came along the garden path, almost to the door, in search of something to eat. I was so thrilled to get this photo of a normally shy species that I rewarded the plucky bird with some mealworms. Luckily my garden birds didn’t go hungry in the snow.

This Dark-eyed Junco is sitting in a tree during a snow storm. They are year round inhabitants in our upstate New York environment. Mainly ground feeders, they are usually seen and heard twittering under the feeder stations in our back yard.
