Blue Jays are year round inhabitants of upstate New York. They are beautiful and comical clowns but can also be pests, keeping the bird seed from the smaller birds. Here two colorful Blue Jays are scratching in the snow for something to eat. Blue shadows form a lovely pattern in the against the white.

A long time ago, I painted an unfinished cuckoo clock for my grandmother. She loved blue jays and cardinals, but I also added in the blue jay of the west, the Steller's Jay. Years later I was lucky enough to see them for myself in Yosemite National Park. The first one I saw was off the Panorama Trail, but this one was much closer to civilization near the main lodge.

More Cardinals Calendars

Enjoy this seasonal 2011 calendar with exquisite photography of twelve different northeastern birds. Included are a Northern Cardinal, Blue Jays, Canada Geese, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, a White-Throated Sparrow, an American Goldfinch, a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, a Common Grackle, a Tufted Titmouse, a Red-Breasted Nuthatch, a Black-capped Chickadee and a pair of Redpolls. All photographs were taken near my home in the hills of rural New York.
