This magnet features a Red-breasted Nuthatch who looks like he is taking charge! He is a very small bird with a rust colored breast, blue-gray back and a black eye stripe. His head and beak are very large in proportion to his body. The nuthatches are permanent, year round inhabitants of our part of upstate New York. They forage on the trunks and large branches of trees, often descending head first, sometimes catching insects in flight. They mainly eat insects and seeds. Their call is like a tin trumpet.

Some winters a huge flock of redpolls arrive in our neck of the woods in upstate New York. They are such tiny, little creatures! I took these photos out the window during a snow storm and had a bit of fun devising this card with two redpolls dreaming of spring.

This sweet little White-throated Sparrow migrates through our part of upstate New York twice a year, heading north in the spring and south in the fall. The flock stays around our bird feeders for a few weeks, singing very sweetly, before continuing on their journey.

Who’s hungry? Well this cheeky Cockney Sparrow from London town certainly looks peckish as he makes off with a beak full of juicy mealworms. I like to feed the birds a couple of hundred mealworms every day so they can keep themselves and their chicks fighting fit all year round. This apron will remind you of all the hungry mouths in your household waiting to be fed.

A brilliant red Northern Cardinal is eating sunflower seeds during a snow storm. I took this photo through my back window on an incredibly cold and wintry day in upstate New York. The cardinals live here all year round. We enjoy their lovely singing and gorgeous colors. By mid-summer, they are bringing their babies to the feeding stations to teach them where they can get seed next winter.

A digital watercolour painting of a Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) sitting on a cherry blossom tree. During courtship, male cardinals feed seeds to the female beak to beak. This painting was inspired by a pair of cardinals whom paid regular visits to the garden whilst I was in Arkansas during the summer of 2009. Available on a range of products in the ArtformTheHeart store.
