This photo was taken at beautiful Sapsucker Woods, home of the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. Wooden walkways through miles of swamps and marshes provide wonderful opportunities to view all the birds in every season. This birder is at one of the overlooks enjoying the wildlife in the main pond. Cornell maintains the world famous website, All About Birds, for bird identification:

This Horned Owl was injured along a roadside and nursed back to health at a large bird rescue. Unable to be reintroduced into the wild, it is now captive and used for educational presentations by the local Zoo. Here it feeds on a young baby chick for lunch!
